Vitamins D, K2, and the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are nutrients that should be monitored not only by those living a vegan lifestyle. It is not always easy to cover the supply of these nutrients through everyday nutrition. Additionally, increased physical activity or malnutrition can raise the demand.

Vitamin D3
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. This means that, unlike water-soluble vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins are absorbed together with fats. If you take Vitamin D alongside fatty foods, you can enhance absorption.
Under optimal conditions, the coverage of Vitamin D3 through the body's own production via UVB light exposure is ensured. However, UVB radiation in our latitudes is only high enough between spring and summer to produce sufficient Vitamin D. Additionally, one would need to soak up UVB radiation daily with uncovered skin and without sunscreen during this period. While there are foods that contain Vitamin D, they are only present in small amounts.
The results of the National Consumption Study II (NVS II) show that large parts of the German population have an insufficient intake of Vitamin D. According to NVS II, over 90% of women and over 80% of men did not reach the minimum intake recommended by the German Nutrition Society (DGE).1 The DGE recommends a daily intake of at least 20 µg for adults in the absence of self-production of Vitamin D.2 The maximum daily amount considered safe for lifelong supplementation, in addition to UVB radiation, has been set by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) at 100 µg/day.3
If you do not produce enough Vitamin D3 yourself, you can prevent a Vitamin deficiency through supplementation. The Vitamin D in our VEGAN ESSENTIALS is of plant origin and is 100% derived from lichens. Just two capsules containing 25 µg of Vitamin D3 each per day easily and safely cover your needs.
Vitamin D and Vitamin K are particularly important for a healthy skeleton, as both contribute to the maintenance of normal bones – a fact that was reaffirmed by a study in 2020.4 Furthermore, Vitamin D plays a role in cell division and contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus. In addition, it contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function and normal teeth.
Vitamin K2
We primarily know Vitamin K in two forms: as Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and as Vitamin K2 (menaquinone). Vitamin K is also fat-soluble and is found in its K1 form in many plant foods such as cabbage or leafy greens. Vitamin K2, on the other hand, is produced bacterially and is therefore mainly found in animal foods such as milk or meat, but also in fermented (plant-based) foods.
Vitamin K mainly contributes to normal blood clotting and the maintenance of normal bones and should therefore be supplemented in cases of insufficient dietary intake.
According to the DGE, the daily requirement for Vitamin K for adults varies by age and gender, ranging from 50 µg to 80 µg.5 Due to a lack of data, there is currently no upper limit for Vitamin K2. However, studies show, according to EFSA, no evidence of harmful health effects associated with an additional intake of Vitamin K in the form of phylloquinone of up to 10 mg/day.6 The Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals (EVM) has set a guideline for a safe total daily intake for additional intake from dietary supplements for adults at up to 1,000 µg.7
In our VEGAN ESSENTIALS, we of course rely on the patented micro-encapsulated all-trans Vitamin K2-MK7 from Kappa Bioscience. This is a very stable form of Vitamin K2 with high bioavailability. Unprotected, Vitamin K2 – and especially the highly bioavailable form of K2-MK7 – can be degraded in certain formulations with other substances or under certain conditions. For this reason, we only use micro-encapsulated Vitamin K2-MK7. This way, you are truly provided with the amount we state on the label. The compound we use in our VEGAN ESSENTIALS can be particularly well utilised. The recommended intake of 2 capsules per day contains an appropriate dose of 50 μg of Vitamin K2.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Fatty acids play an important role as energy carriers in our metabolism. Omega-3 fatty acids are particularly essential in this context. Since the human body cannot produce them on its own, the intake of omega-3 fatty acids must be secured through food.
The most important omega-3 fatty acids include:
- Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)
- Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
- Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
The two long-chain omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA can only be formed by our body in very small amounts from plant-based ALA, which is found in flaxseed oil, for example.8 For this reason, an additional intake of EPA and DHA for adequate coverage of fatty acids is recommended even by the largest cardiological societies in Europe and the USA, the European Society of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.
Omega-3 fatty acids not only influence our cell membrane as components but are also precursors to some hormones and other substances in the body. Additionally, DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision – an effect that is observed with a daily intake of 250 mg of DHA. Furthermore, DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function from an intake of 250 mg of DHA. Both EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function. This effect occurs with a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA/DHA.
A serving of our VEGAN ESSENTIALS (2 capsules per day) contains 1440 µg of pure plant-based algae oil, providing 432 mg of DHA and 216 mg of EPA, so that the absorbed omega-3 fatty acids can fully unfold their effect.

Consumption
Take 1 capsule twice a day with sufficient liquid, preferably before a fatty meal. Due to legal regulations, the maximum amount of DHA and EPA combined in oil from the microalgae Schizochytrium sp. is limited to 450 mg/day for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Therefore, a maximum of 9 capsules/week or alternatively ESSENTIALS O3-D3-K2 with fish oil is recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
